What is the most dangerous thing you do on a daily basis? Drive your car to work? Operate a piece of heavy machinery? Trim your beard with a straight razor? On any given day, the average person participates in several dangerous activities. Fortunately, we minimize the threat of these dangerous activities with safety procedures and training. We should handle cockroaches in the same way. If you don’t know much about these invasive pests or the dangers they pose, here are a few things you should know.

Common Cockroaches Around Phoenix

Not all cockroaches are the same. In fact, Phoenix is home to several different species of roach. Here are the four most common in our area and what you need to know about each.

  • German cockroaches are the most common species of home-invading roach in the United States. This light brown or tan pest is best identified by its 13-16 mm long body, and the two almost parallel, horizontal stripes located just behind its head.
  • American cockroaches are the largest native species of roach in the United States. This reddish-brown or mahogany pest is best identified by its 50 mm long body and the yellow figure-eight pattern located just behind its head.
  • Oriental cockroaches, also known as water bugs, are uniquely different in appearance than their close relatives. This shiny black to dark reddish-brown pest is best identified by their 25-32 mm long body and lack of distinguishing markings.

How Well Do You Know Cockroaches?

Cockroaches are often associated with filth, trash, and decay. On tv, people interact with these creepy, dirty pests to win money. What you might not know is that the cockroaches you see on reality tv are kept in controlled environments and fed sanitary food for the safety of individuals who have to interact with them. Cockroaches out in the wild are much more dangerous as they have no restrictions from the dirty places they roam or the bacteria-ridden food they eat. Around homes, these dangerous pests spread disease-causing bacteria that can get homeowners very sick.

In addition to spreading disease, cockroaches also trigger asthma attacks. As cockroaches shed their skin and excrete their waste throughout homes, particulates are released into the air. These particulates, when inhaled, cause breathing problems in those who are respiratorily compromised.

How Hard Are Cockroaches To Eliminate?

Have you ever heard it said that cockroaches will still be around for centuries after humanity is gone? This is mainly because of these pests’ ability to survive harsh climates and normally life-threatening conditions. As fascinating as this is to study, cockroaches' survivability does raise some serious concerns for homeowners trying to handle problems on their own. Before you waste time, money, and effort trying to eliminate cockroaches, understand that your attempts to handle these pests will have a high likelihood of not working. Even if you do find a product that eliminates cockroaches effectively, you still have to know how to apply it properly as to not put your family and pets at risk.
