Five Easy Ways To Keep Crickets Out Of Your Phoenix Home

You have enough difficult things to deal with in life - cricket control shouldn't make things even more challenging. Fortunately, there are a few easy steps you can take to keep crickets out of your Phoenix home. Learn the five things you should do to prevent crickets from taking over your home.

1. Know Your Enemy

Perhaps the simplest form of cricket prevention is education. By knowing about the local crickets, you can better understand what it takes to keep them out. In Phoenix, there are three common types of crickets. The field cricket is dark brown or black and has spurs on its legs. Meanwhile, the tropical house cricket is similar in color, but the males have shorter wings, and the females of this species have no wings at all. Finally, the house cricket is lighter than both other types of crickets and has smaller spurs.    Typically, homeowners only dread crickets for their noisy chirping. But crickets in Phoenix aren't just annoying - they're also dangerous. House crickets can spread diseases like E. coli and salmonella, and also attract dangerous pests like scorpions and spiders. Having crickets around puts everyone in your household in danger.

2. Seal Openings

The exterior of your home could have many entrances for crickets. By sealing those entrances, you protect your home from these invaders. Check your walls for cracks and crevices, and find ways to seal them up. If you notice gaps around your electric wiring and plumbing, seal those as well. Even if you have a new home, you could have openings large enough for crickets.

3. Store Trash Outside And Sealed

Every night, take your trash outside and store it in a sealed bag in a trash can with a lid. When you have trash in your home, it attracts crickets and other pests. While it's inside, your trash should remain in a can with a tightly sealed lid.   Crickets are omnivores, which means they eat almost anything. Your garbage could be the one reason crickets are coming inside. In addition to eating the crumbs in your garbage, crickets may also eat the other insects that are attracted to the garbage.

4. Maintain Your Yard

Outside, crickets like to hide behind tall grasses and weeds. To make your property less appealing to these pests, mow your lawn regularly. Pull your weeds and use a weed eater as necessary. When lawn debris accumulates, dispose of it properly. By maintaining your yard, you give crickets fewer hiding spots.    It doesn't take long for crickets to realize that your property is a prime location. If your yard gets out of control for even a short time, your home could be vulnerable. Do your best to maintain your yard, or you could be facing a problem.

5. Vacuum Often

Once inside your home, crickets lay eggs in rugs and carpets. You can keep the cricket population to a minimum by vacuuming your floors frequently. This prevents the eggs from hatching and limits cricket numbers.   After you vacuum, empty the debris into a sealed bag. Then, place the bag in a sealed garbage can. While this may keep the cricket population from exploding, it won't completely protect your property.
